Firm Worship After Purification

Bhagavad Gita 7.28

Meaning · English

Those whose sins have been completely destroyed, who act with piety, and who are free from the illusion of dualities, worship me with firm determination.

Three terms carry the verse. Papa is sin, the weight left by wrong action, and Krishna says it has been completely worn away. Punya-karma is pious action, good deeds done over a long stretch of living. Dvandva is the pairs, such as pleasure and pain, liking and disliking, gain and loss, and moha is the bewilderment that makes one half of each pair look like the whole of life. Plainly, Krishna tells Arjuna that some people have lived rightly for so long that wrong has run out in them and the swing between the pairs has lost its grip. Such people worship him, and they do it with a vow that holds. The reason comes from the verse before it, where desire and aversion are named as the source of delusion from birth. This is the answer to how anyone leaves that state: through long good living that loosens the knot, then through steady devotion. It asks that devotion be firm and not a mood that arrives in trouble and fades in comfort. Shankara, in his reading, takes the purified mind as the ground for steady devotion and knowledge of the Self. Ramanuja reads the freed persons as devotees who take firm refuge in the Lord. Madhva reads the same freedom from sin as the ground for steady worship of the Lord as supreme.

A boat tied to a post in a harbour rises and drops with every wave, yet it stays where it is. The waves are the pairs of pleasure and pain, and the rope is the firm vow. Tied this way, the worshipper still feels the water move but is not carried off by it.

1. Tonight, write down two things from today that pleased you and two that annoyed you. It takes five minutes. 2. Next to each, note whether it pulled at you after it was over. 3. Choose one small act of worship or quiet thanks, such as lighting a lamp or sitting a minute before eating, and do it at the same hour for seven days, whatever the day brings. 4. On day seven, notice whether good and bad days felt different around that fixed moment.

A farmer stands at his gate at dawn as the first rain falls after weeks of drought. Joy rises in him, then the next thought arrives: the neighbour's low field will flood, and his own seedlings may not survive. Within a minute he has swung from relief to dread. Krishna's teaching speaks to that minute. The swing is not the rain's doing. It comes from wanting one outcome and fearing the other. A person whose long habit has been to act rightly and to return daily to the same worship has a place to stand while the swing passes. The farmer would still feel gladness and worry, but he would not be thrown by them, and he could walk to his neighbour's field with a clear head. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a fixed daily habit steadies a person when moods run high. The verse does not promise that the crop survives, that the neighbour is spared, or that grief will not come. It says only that a mind freed from the pull of the pairs can meet either result and keep its worship.
