Meaning · English

Then I shall become known on earth as Shakambhari. In that very form I shall slay the great demon named Durgama. And my name will be Durga Devi, famed in the world.

The Goddess is speaking to the gods, and she is naming a future birth. Three words carry it. Shakambhari means she who bears vegetables and greens: shaka is a leafy plant, bhri is to carry or nourish. Durgama is the demon's name, and it means hard to reach or hard to cross. Durga, the name she takes, comes from the same root: durga is a place hard to get through, a fortress, a bad road, a trouble that has no way out. So the verse runs in three steps. First, she will be known on earth as Shakambhari, the one who feeds. Second, in that same form she will kill the demon Durgama. Third, from this deed her name will be Durga Devi, famed in the world. The name is not given at birth. It is won by the act, and it is the demon's own name turned into hers: she is the one who makes the impassable passable. The Goddess tells this to the gods because they have just asked her to come back whenever trouble rises, and she answers with a list of promised births, each with a name people will use. The text teaches that a name is a promise. Call her Durga, and you call on the one who crosses what cannot be crossed. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to hear the name and know what it holds. Commentators on the Saptashati generally read these promises as her pledge never to leave the world unhelped.

A village keeps calling a certain woman the ferrywoman because the year the river rose and every boat was lost, she carried people across on her back. The name came from the crossing. In the same way, Durga is a name earned by the act of bringing people through what had no way through.
