And again, when I take a fearsome form in the Himalayas and devour the demons for the protection of the sages, then all the sages will praise me, bowing low in body. My name will be known as Bhima Devi, the Fearsome Goddess.
Two words carry the verse. Bhima means fearsome, from a root for fear or dread. Rakshas are the demons she eats; the word comes from a sense of 'those from whom one must be guarded'. The word for the sages' safety, trana, means protection, a shield held over someone. The Goddess is speaking to the gods and foretelling a coming birth. She says that when she takes a dreadful shape in the Himalayas, she will devour the rakshasas who prey on sages. The sages, who cannot defend themselves by force, will bow with their whole bodies and praise her. From that, she says, her name will be Bhima Devi. This answers the gods' plea in the hymn: what happens when harm rises again? Her reply is a promise with a pattern. She comes in whatever form the trouble needs. Here the need is fear itself, turned against those who spread it. The reason she gives is protection of the sages, not any wish of her own. A name in this teaching is a record of a deed. She is called Bhima because of what she did for others. The text asks nothing of the listener here except to hear that the fearsome form and the sages' bow belong together: the terror is aimed at the threat, and the sages meet it with praise and trust.
A watchdog is gentle with the family and fierce at the gate. Its growl frightens only the intruder, and the household sleeps easier for it. The Goddess's fearsome form works the same way: terror aimed at those who threaten, safety for those inside.
