The Bee Against Aruna

Devi Mahatmya 11.49

Meaning · English

When the demon called Aruna brings great suffering upon the three worlds, then I will take the form of a bee, with countless six-footed bees about me. For the good of the three worlds I will kill that great demon. And then people everywhere will praise me as Bhramari, the Bee.

The Goddess is foretelling one more coming. She gives it as a promise to the gods, in her own voice. Three words carry it. Bhramari means 'she of the bee', from bhramara, a bee, the creature that wanders and hums. Shatpada means 'six-footed', which is the Sanskrit way of saying bee. Trailokya means the three worlds: earth, the sky between, and heaven. The whole creation is meant. Now the clauses. A demon named Aruna will cause great trouble across the three worlds. When he does, she will take a bee's form, and the bees with her will be past counting. She will kill him, and she says why: for the good of the three worlds. Her motive is the welfare of others, not anger. Then she names the result. People everywhere will praise her as Bhramari. Why is this taught here? The gods have just asked for help whenever trouble comes, and she answers by listing the shapes she will take. Each one fits its trouble, and each gives a new name to praise her by. The names are how the hymn stays alive. The verse asks of the listener only this: to know the Mother by what she has done, and to expect her where the need is.

A single hornet is easy to swat. A swarm that fills the sky is not, and a whole village keeps still before it. The countless bees are the Goddess's answer to a demon who has spread everywhere: her help is as wide as his harm.
