Whenever Trouble Comes, She Returns

Devi Mahatmya 11.51

Meaning · English

Thus, whenever trouble arises from the demons, I will descend again and again, and each time I will bring the enemies to their end.

Three words carry this promise. Badha means affliction, a pressing-down, the way a weight lies on a chest. Avatirya comes from ava, down, and tri, to cross: to cross down, to descend. It is the same root as avatara. Arisamkshaya joins ari, enemy, with samkshaya, a complete wearing away. The Goddess promises an ending of the enemy, not a scolding of him. Now the clauses. Thus: after naming the forms she will take, she gathers them into one rule. Whenever trouble arises from the demons: the danavas, the brood of Danu, are the ones the text names as the source. Then, again and again, I descend: the repeated word in her promise means every time, not once. Finally, I will end the enemies. Why is it taught here? The gods have just praised her, and the question under every hymn is what happens after the battle is won. Does the world stay safe? She answers that no victory is final, since trouble can rise again, and neither is her help. The Devi Mahatmya presents her as a Mother who comes back for as long as she is needed. The promise asks nothing of the gods but trust. They are given a standing assurance, so that fear need not outlast each danger.

Picture a village fire brigade. Fires come at different times and in different places, yet when the bell rings the same crew drives out and does not stop until the fire is out. The village need not guess whether help will come. The Goddess's promise works the same way: the trouble changes, and her coming does not.
