Meaning · English
Whoever praises me always with these hymns, with a gathered mind, I will destroy every affliction of theirs. There is no doubt of it. And those who tell of the destruction of Madhu and Kaitabha, and the slaying of Mahishasura, and likewise the killing of Shumbha and Nishumbha. And those who, one-minded, on the eighth, the fourteenth and the ninth days, praise with devotion this highest greatness of mine.
The gods have just finished their hymn. Now the Goddess answers them with a promise, in the story Medhas tells to the king and the merchant. Three words carry it. Stava is a hymn of praise, from stu, to praise. Samahita means gathered together: a mind that has stopped scattering. Badha is affliction, from a root meaning to press or obstruct, whatever hems a person in. A fourth word, mahatmya, means greatness, and it is the name of the whole book. The Goddess says that anyone who praises her with these hymns, always and with a gathered mind, will have all their affliction destroyed. She adds that there is no doubt about it. Then she names what is worth telling: the death of Madhu and Kaitabha, the slaying of Mahishasura, and the killing of Shumbha and Nishumbha. These are the three great battles of the book. She also names the eighth, fourteenth and ninth days of the lunar fortnight. The one-minded who praise her greatness with bhakti, loving devotion, are the ones she describes. The question underneath is simple. The gods have sung to her, and the reader wonders what such singing is worth to ordinary people. The Goddess's answer is that the praise is not wasted. She ties the promise to two things: a mind held together, and a real telling of what she has done. The text asks for steadiness and a single heart, not for loud or clever praise.
A footpath across a field stays open because feet keep crossing it. Leave it for a season and the grass closes over. Steady praise is like that walking: the path to her stays clear because the mind goes the same way, again and again.
