Meaning · English

For them no wrongdoing of any kind, and no misfortune born of wrongdoing. Poverty will not come to them, nor separation from those they love. They will have no fear of an enemy, of a robber, or of a king. Never will fear arise for them from weapon, fire or flood.

The Goddess speaks of those who hold to her praise, and lists what will not touch them. Medhas retells her words to the king and the merchant, who had each lost something. Two words carry the first line. Duskrita is a wrong deed, from dus, bad, and krita, done. Apad is misfortune, a falling-upon, from pad, to fall. The Goddess joins them: no wrong act, and no calamity that grows out of a wrong act. The text sees harm as often coming from our own doing. Then come the losses. Daridrya is poverty, want. Ishta-viyojana is parting from the dear ones, from ishta, wished-for, and viyoga, being pulled apart. These are the very griefs of Suratha, who lost his kingdom, and Samadhi, who lost his family. Then fear. She names the enemy, the robber, the king, which is fear of people and of power. Then weapon, fire and water in flood, which is fear of things. The list leaves out almost nothing a person dreads. It is taught here because the two listeners are frightened and bereft, and the question under their story is whether anything is safe. The Goddess answers with a promise of shelter from sin, loss and fear alike. The commentators read such promises as the fruit of devotion to her, and they ask for that devotion, not for cleverness.

Think of a child holding a parent's hand in a crowded station. Trains roar, strangers push, the lights are harsh, yet the child walks calmly. The danger is still around, but the hand holds. The Goddess's promise works like that grip: what stands near the devoted is her protection, not an empty road.
