Therefore this greatness of mine should be read with a steady mind, and heard always with devotion. It is a great and supreme blessing. It will quiet all the calamities that rise from a great plague, and likewise the threefold portent of misfortune.
The Goddess tells the gods to read and hear her story, and she gives the reason in the word that opens the verse: because of what she has just described, her greatness is worth returning to. Three words carry it. Mahatmya means greatness, from mahat, great, and atman, self: the full stature of who she is. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in; she asks that hearing be done in that spirit, not as duty. Svastyayana means a blessing for well-being, a going-forth that is safe. She calls this text a supreme and great one. Then she names what it quiets. Upasarga means a calamity that falls on people from outside. Mahamari is a great plague, a death that spreads through whole towns. Utpata means an omen or portent, a sign that harm is coming. She speaks of three kinds, and the text does not list them here, so none is added. The commentators read such omens as signs of trouble gathering, not only the trouble itself. The question behind the verse is what the story is for. Her answer is that it protects, and not only one reader at one hour: it reaches the sorrows that strike a whole community. What it asks of the listener is care and steadiness in reading, and love in hearing, and that is all the verse asks.
A village keeps a well at its centre. When dry weather or sickness comes, everyone already knows where the clean water is, and goes there. The Goddess's story is offered like that well: kept near, visited often, and there before the trouble arrives.
