Wherever this account of mine is recited rightly and constantly in my dwelling, I will never leave that place. My presence stays there. At the giving of offerings, at worship, at the fire rite, at a great festival, all of this story of my deeds should be spoken aloud and heard. Whether the offering and worship have been made with knowledge or without it, I will accept them gladly. The fire oblation made in that way I will accept as well.

The Goddess is speaking to the gods, and Medhas passes her words on to the king and the merchant. She makes two promises and gives one instruction. Three words carry it. Sannidhya means nearness, from sam-ni-dha, to be set down close by. She says her nearness stays fixed in the place where her story is rightly recited. Bali is an offering, from a word for tribute: something set before her as a gift. Homa is the fire oblation, from hu, to pour, because the offering is poured into the flame. Priti is gladness or affection, and it is the spirit in which she says she accepts. Take the clauses in order. First, where her account is recited properly in her dwelling, she does not go away. Second, at the giving of offerings, at worship, at the fire rite and at a great festival, her deeds are to be spoken and heard. The story belongs inside the rite, not beside it. Third, if the offering or worship was done by someone who knew the right way, or by someone who did not, she accepts it gladly. The fire oblation too. The question underneath is the worried one: what if I get the rite wrong? The Goddess answers that her acceptance does not rest on perfect knowledge. It rests on her own gladness. She also names what she asks for in return, which is simple: that her story be spoken aloud and listened to. The text presents her nearness as a promise she makes, and recitation as the way she is kept company.

A child hands a parent a crooked drawing, the colours spilling past the lines. The parent does not correct it. They pin it up where everyone can see it. The drawing is imperfect and the gladness is real. The Goddess's acceptance of unskilled offerings works in the same way.
