Meaning · English

In autumn, when the yearly great worship is performed, a person who hears this account of my greatness with devotion is freed from every obstacle. By my grace that person becomes rich in wealth and grain. There is no doubt of it. Having heard of my greatness, and of my births told one by one, each of them auspicious, and of my valor in battles, a man becomes free of fear.

The Goddess speaks to the gods and names a particular season: autumn, when the yearly great worship is held. She says that hearing her story then does certain things for the hearer. Three words carry it. Mahatmya means greatness, from mahat, great. It is the name for this whole account of her. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. The hearing she describes is done with bhakti, not as a duty ticked off. Prasada means grace, a gift freely given. She says the result comes by her prasada, not by the hearer's own cleverness or effort. Now the clauses. First, the hearer is freed from all obstacles and becomes rich in wealth and grain, the ordinary measures of a household's well-being. She adds that there is no doubt. Second, she turns to what is heard: her greatness, her several births told separately, each one auspicious, and her valor in battle. A person who hears these becomes nirbhaya, without fear. Why is this taught here? Suratha lost a kingdom and Samadhi lost his family. Both are people whom loss has frightened. The Goddess answers that need directly. The text teaches that her story steadies and provides for those who hear it with love. The reason she gives is herself: it is her grace. The verse asks only that the story be heard with devotion, and it lists what is worth hearing: who she is, how she was born again and again, and how she stood in battle.

A traveler is told, by someone who has crossed it often, every turn of a mountain pass: where the rocks fall, where the shelters stand, how others got through. At the foot of the path the traveler is calm. Hearing her births and her valor in full is that telling, and the calm is the fearlessness.
