Enemies come to ruin, and good fortune comes to those who hear my greatness. The family of such people rejoices. In every rite of peace, and when a bad dream is seen, and when harsh troubles from the planets press, let my greatness be heard. Calamities come to rest, and the dreadful torments of the planets as well. A bad dream that people have seen turns into a good dream.

The Goddess speaks these lines to the gods, as the sage Medhas retells them. Three Sanskrit words carry them. Mahatmya means greatness, from mahatman, the great-souled one; here it names the telling of her deeds. Shanti means peace or calming, from sham, to grow quiet; a shantikarma is a rite for settling trouble. Graha means a seizer, from grah, to grasp; it is the old word for the planets, which the text counts as powers that can grip a person's life. Now the clauses. First she says that for those who hear her greatness, enemies come to ruin, good comes to them, and their family rejoices. The gain reaches past the single listener to the household. Next she names the moments for hearing: in every rite of peace, after a bad dream, and when the planets press hard. These are times of fear, when the mind has nothing steady to hold. Last she says that calamities come to rest, the planets' torments grow quiet, and a bad dream is turned into a good one. Why is this taught here? She is closing her story with what its telling gives to those who listen. Her answer to the frightened is that when trouble comes, they have her account of a power that met far worse and held. The text asks nothing more of the listener than to hear her greatness, in the very hours when fear is loudest. The commentators generally read such promises as praise of the hearing itself, which turns the mind toward her.

A child wakes from a nightmare and the house feels full of shapes. A parent sits on the bed and speaks in an even voice, and the shapes become a coat on a hook and a chair. The Goddess's greatness, heard in the dark hour, plays the parent's part: the fear is the same hour, seen differently.
