The Goddess says to the gods: hearing this greatness of mine brings peace to children seized by the child-afflicting spirits. It is the best maker of friendship among people when a group has split apart. It greatly weakens the strength of all those of evil conduct. By the mere reading of it, the ogres, ghosts and flesh-eating spirits are destroyed. All of this greatness of mine brings my presence near.
Three Sanskrit words carry this passage. Mahatmya means greatness, from mahatman, the great self: the account of who she is and what she has done. Shanti means peace, a settling of what was disturbed. Sannidhi means nearness, from sam and ni-dha, to set down close by. The Goddess speaks to the gods, as Medhas retells it. She names four troubles. First, small children seized by the balagrahas, the spirits the old texts blamed for infant illness and fretting. She says her greatness brings them peace. Second, a group that has broken into factions. She calls the hearing of it the best maker of friendship, so that people who split can be joined again. Third, those of crooked conduct. Their strength is cut down, which is a quiet way of saying wrongdoing loses its footing. Fourth, rakshasas, bhutas and pishachas, the ogres and restless ghosts of the tradition. By reading alone, she says, they are destroyed. Then she closes: all of this greatness of hers makes her presence close. Why is it taught here? The gods have praised her, and she answers by telling what her story is for. Each trouble named is one that people feel helpless before: a sick child, a family at war, a bully, an unseen fear. She places her account against all of them. The last line gives the reason she offers: the account is not a charm apart from her. It draws her near. What it asks of the listener is only to take the account as hers. Bhaskararaya's Guptavati, like the commentators generally, reads this phalashruti, the statement of fruits, as praise meant to turn the hearer toward the text, not as a bargain.
A lamp carried into a dark house. Children stop crying, quarrelling voices drop, and the corners stop looking like monsters. The lamp does not fight the dark one shadow at a time. Its nearness does the work, as the Goddess says her presence does.
