Meaning · English
The Goddess says to the gods: With animal offerings, flowers, water of welcome and incense, with perfumes and lamps of the finest kind, with feeding of brahmins, with gold, with sprinklings of holy water day and night, and with many other pleasures and gifts, the delight I take in a whole year of such worship is the delight I take when this story of my good deeds is heard just once. What is heard removes sins and gives health. The telling of my births guards against the spirits that bring harm.
Three words carry this teaching. Priti means delight or warm pleasure, from a root meaning to please and to cheer. Papa means wrong done, the weight a person carries after it. Raksha means guarding, from a root meaning to protect. The Goddess first lists a long round of worship: animal offerings, flowers, water for the guest's feet, incense, scent, lamps, feeding scholars, gifts of gold, sprinkling day and night. She calls it a year of such giving, and adds many other pleasures and gifts. Then she weighs all of it against one thing. The delight she takes in that year, she tells the gods, is the delight she takes when her story is heard a single time. The second verse says what the hearing does, as she tells it. It takes away sins. It gives health. The telling of her births, meaning the many times she appears, guards against bhutas, spirits that bring harm. Why say this here? The Goddess is closing her promise to the gods, and she gives the reason for the whole hymn and story. What pleases her most is not the cost or length of an offering. It is that her deeds are listened to and remembered. This also answers a plain worry: what if a person has no gold, no time and no rites to give? The Goddess says one hearing is enough to please her. What it asks of the listener is only the hearing itself, given with attention.
A mother has received expensive gifts all year from a visiting relative. Then her child sits down beside her and tells her, slowly and truthfully, what happened that day. That one conversation pleases her more. The Goddess weighs a year of lavish offerings against one attentive hearing of her story.
