Meaning · English
The Goddess says: the story of my deeds in battle, the destroying of the wicked daityas, is such that when it is heard, fear born of enemies does not arise in men. And the praises made by you, the gods, and those made by the brahmarshis, and those made by Brahma, give an auspicious end, a good going.
The Goddess speaks of two things she has given the world: the tale of her battles and the hymns of praise. Three words carry most of it. Bhaya is fear, and here it is vairikrita, fear made by an enemy. Stuti is praise, from the root stu, to extol aloud. Gati is a going, a course, a destination, and shubha makes it auspicious: a good end. The first clause says what the battle story does. It tells how the wicked daityas were brought down, and the Goddess teaches that men who hear it are not gripped by fear of their foes. The story stands as a record that such force was met and ended. The second clause turns to the praises. The gods made some, the sages who know the Veda made others, and Brahma made others. Of all these the Goddess says they give a good gati. She is naming who composed them, and that is her reason for trusting them: they come from the gods and sages who stood before her and understood what they had seen. It is taught here because a promise to the hearer is being gathered up: protection from fear now, and a good course afterward. The verse asks only for the hearing and the praising. It does not ask for strength or cleverness. The Goddess presents her story and these hymns as the means.
A footpath worn through a forest by many travellers before. Nobody has to find the way alone, because the ground itself shows it. The hymns made by gods and sages are that worn path, and the Goddess says it leads to a good end.
