Meaning · English
In a forest or a wilderness, or ringed round by a forest fire; surrounded by robbers in an empty place, or seized by enemies; chased by lions or tigers, or by wild elephants in the woods; commanded by an angry king, condemned to die, or held in bonds; tossed about by wind, standing on a ship on the great ocean; with weapons falling thick in a fearful battle; in every terrible affliction, or tormented by pain: a person who remembers this story of mine is freed from that danger.
The Goddess speaks to the gods, and Medhas passes her words on to Suratha and Samadhi. She gives a long list, and the list is the point. Two words carry the verse. Smaran means remembering, calling something back to the mind and holding it there. Sankata means a tight place, from the sense of being pressed together; it is the narrow spot where a person cannot move. Charita, the word for her story, means what she has done, her deeds as they happened. Now the clauses. First come lonely places: forest, wilderness, a fire closing in, robbers where no one can hear. Then enemies, then beasts: lions, tigers, wild elephants. Then human power: an angry king's order, a death sentence, prison. Then the sea and the wind, a ship with no shore in sight. Then war, with weapons falling. The last line gathers up everything left: any dreadful affliction, any pain that wears a person down. The Goddess names danger from fire, animals, people, rulers, water, battle and the body, so that no kind of trouble stands outside her promise. Why is it taught here? The gods had just heard how hearing her story removes sin, brings health and guards against creatures. This verse answers the plainest fear behind that: what about the moment when I am actually in trouble? The Goddess says remembering her story is enough to be released from the pinch. The text teaches this as her own word, not as a report of what usually happens. It asks only for remembering, in whatever place the person is standing. The commentators do not make it anything more than that.
A traveller caught in a storm far from home pats his coat and finds a letter from his mother, and reading her familiar handwriting steadies him. The story is that letter: carried everywhere, and its presence reaches the person in whatever place he is stranded.
