Meaning · English

Through my power, lions and other beasts, thieves and enemies run far away from the one who remembers my deeds. Having spoken so, the blessed Chandika, fierce in her valour, vanished right there, while the gods looked on.

Two things happen in these lines: a last promise, then a departure. The Goddess names the ones who frighten us most: beasts like the lion, thieves (dasyu), and enemies (vairin). She says that they flee, and flee from far off, from anyone who remembers her deeds. The word for remembering is smarana. It means calling something back to mind, and the text sets it against fear, which scatters the mind. The word prabhava means her power, the strength that comes from her being what she is. So the Goddess does not credit the person's courage. She says the fleeing happens through her power. Then comes the departure. She is called bhagavati, the blessed one, and Chandika, fierce in valour (chanda-vikrama). Gentle and fierce are said of the same figure. She speaks, and she vanishes (antardhana, being set out of sight) in front of the gods, who watch. The reason for placing the promise just before she goes is plain. The gods asked for help in the dark time, and she gave it. Now they need to know what remains once she is out of sight. The text answers that her deeds, kept in memory, stay with them. The commentators read the line as a promise about her presence, not only her past acts. What it asks of the listener is modest: to hold her deeds in mind, since the text says that is where the protection lies.

A lamp carried through a dark yard sends the stray dogs back to the fence, though no one raises a hand. The light does the work. The Goddess's power does the work in the same way, and remembering her deeds is keeping that lamp lit.
