Meaning · English
Freed from fear by the Goddess, the gods took up their own offices again as before, and all of them once more enjoyed their shares of the sacrifice, their enemies destroyed. When Shumbha, enemy of the gods, was struck down in battle, and Nishumbha too, mighty, fierce, matchless in valour, a destroyer of the world, the daityas who were left went away to Patala.
Medhas is finishing the story of the great war for King Suratha, and he counts what was restored. Three words carry it. Adhikara means an office or rightful charge, from adhi-kri, to be set over a task. Each god has a work in the world, and the demons had taken those works away. Yajnabhaga means the share of the sacrifice: yajna is offering, from yaj, to give, and bhaga is a portion. The gods live on what is offered and give back through their work, so this share is their place in an exchange. Nirataṅka means free of terror. Medhas puts it first. The gods go back to their duties because the Goddess has taken their fear away. Then he names the two fallen brothers, Shumbha and Nishumbha, as enemies of the gods and a danger to the whole world. The demons who survive flee to Patala, the nether region. Medhas says only that they went there. The story is told to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant driven from his home. Medhas shows them that a lost place can be given back, and that the Goddess is the one who gives it. The verse asks the listener to see that the end of the war is a world in which everyone has their own work again.
After a flood goes down, the shopkeepers of a town come back to their lanes, sweep out the mud, and put their goods on the same shelves as before. The water was never the town. The gods taking up their old duties are the shopkeepers, and the demons who fled are the water draining away.
