Meaning · English
So the blessed Goddess, though she is without beginning or end, takes birth again and again, O king, and carries out the protection of the world. By her this whole universe is bewildered, and she herself brings the universe to birth. When she is asked, she gives knowledge. When she is pleased, she gives prosperity.
Medhas teaches Suratha four things about the Goddess in two sentences. Two words carry most of it. Nitya means constant, not made and not ended. Sambhuya means coming into being, appearing. Put together, the text says she does not begin when she appears, and she does not end when she leaves. Her coming is a showing, not a birth like ours. The second sentence turns on moha, bewilderment, the confusion that makes us hold tight to what we have and lose track of what we are. Medhas says this whole world is bewildered by her, and also that she is the one who brings the world forth. The same power that confuses is the power that makes. Suratha has lost his throne and still clings to his kingdom in his mind, and Medhas has been explaining that very pull. Then the door opens. Asked, she gives vijnana, which means knowledge that is truly seen and not just heard. Pleased, she gives riddhi, flourishing, the growth of what a household or a life needs. Why say this now? The king asked why a wise man still feels such pain over what is gone. Medhas answers that the bewildering is hers, and so is the release from it. The text asks only that she be asked and that she be pleased. The commentators read the bewilderment and the knowledge as belonging to one Goddess, not two powers.
A fog sits on a valley at dawn. It hides the road, and walkers lose their way in it. The same sun that makes the fog rise from the river also burns it off by noon. The Goddess is both the fog and the sun here: she bewilders, and she is also the one who clears the sight.
