By her, Mahakali, this whole egg of the cosmos is pervaded, O lord of men. She takes the form of the great doer in the great Time. In her season she is the great plague that kills. In her season she is creation itself, the unborn. She is the one who keeps beings standing, and she is the ancient one. When a household's fortunes are rising, she is Lakshmi in the home, giving increase. In the same household, when fortune has gone, she is Alakshmi, the lack of fortune, and she arises for its ruin.

Medhas tells King Suratha that Mahakali fills the whole cosmos, here called the brahmanda, the egg of Brahma. Three words carry the verse. Kala means time, and also the right moment for a thing. Mahamari is the great death, the sweeping plague. Lakshmi is fortune and increase, and Alakshmi is her lack. Now the clauses. The whole world is pervaded by Mahakali, in the great time, whose form is the great doer. In her moment she is the plague that ends things. In her moment she is the unborn one from whom creation arises. She also holds beings in being between those two, and the text calls her sanatani, the ancient one. Then the verse comes to the king's own life. In a household where fortune is growing, she is Lakshmi, who brings increase. When that fortune is gone, she is Alakshmi, and she comes for its ruin. Suratha has lost his kingdom, and his question is why. Medhas answers that rise and fall are not two forces fighting. The text teaches that one Mother shows herself as making, keeping, ending, gaining and losing, each in its season. Loss is therefore not a sign that she has left him. The verse asks the listener to see the hand in both the full granary and the empty one, and to stop treating the empty one as proof that nothing holds the world. It gives no method here. It gives a way of seeing what has happened to the king, and what happens to anyone.

A farmer's one field is green in spring, golden and heavy at harvest, then stripped and frozen in winter. He does not think three different lands lie under him. The same ground, in its own season, sprouts, feeds and rests. In the same way, the verse names one Goddess behind birth, upkeep, ruin, plenty and want.
