Praise, Flowers, and Four Gifts
Devi Mahatmya 12.38
Meaning · English
Praised and honoured with flowers, incense, perfume and the like, she gives wealth and sons, a mind set on dharma, and a good path.
Medhas names what the Goddess gives when she is praised and honoured. Two words carry the verse. Puja is honouring, here done with flowers, incense and perfume. Stuta is praise, the hymn spoken aloud. Dharma is right living, from the root dhri, to hold up. It is what holds a life together. Then the clauses, one by one. She gives vitta, wealth. She gives sons, the family that carries a house forward. She gives a mind turned toward dharma. And she gives a good path, a good way to go, which the text leaves open to include this life and what follows it. Notice the order. Wealth and children come first, the plain things a householder wants. The turn of the mind to dharma comes after, and the good path closes the list. The king has lost a kingdom and the merchant has lost his family, so these gifts answer their grief directly. Medhas does not call the wish for wealth shameful. He says the Mother gives it, and gives more with it. The verse asks nothing hard of the listener. It tells how the Goddess answers praise and simple offerings. I will not guess at a commentator's reading here, since the commentators add nothing I can state with certainty.
A child brings a mother a handful of picked flowers. She takes them gladly, and the child leaves with a full lunch, a clean shirt and a word of guidance for the road. The small gift is a way of saying hello, and the mother's answer goes far beyond it.
