Meaning · English
Medhas tells the king: this, O king, is the supreme greatness of the Devi, as I have told it to you. Such is the power of the Goddess by whom this world is held up. Knowledge too is brought about by the maya of the blessed Vishnu. By her you are deluded, and this merchant, and other discerning people. Many are deluded now, and others will be deluded in time.
Three words carry the verse. Maya is the Goddess's power to make things appear and to hold them in place. Here it is called the maya of Vishnu, so the Devi and Vishnu's power are named together. Moha, from muh, to be bewildered, is the clouding of the mind that makes a person cling to what is passing. Viveka, from vic, to separate, is the discernment that tells lasting from passing. Vidya is knowledge. The plain sense, clause by clause: Medhas closes his account of the Devi. Her power is such that she upholds the whole world. Even knowledge is produced by her maya, so understanding is not outside her reach. Then he turns to the two listeners. Suratha, the merchant, and other people of discernment are all deluded by her. Some are deluded already. Others will be. Why teach this here? Both men have asked why they still ache for a kingdom and a family that wronged them, though they know better. Medhas answers that knowing better does not free a person from her hold. He does not scold them. He puts them among many wise people. The teaching asks the listener to see that cleverness alone does not end the bewilderment, and that the same Goddess who binds is the one the next verses point to for release.
A person with weak eyes puts on spectacles and the street comes clear. Yet the glass still sits between the eye and the street, and it can fog or smudge. Knowledge works like that glass in this teaching. It helps, and it is still made by the same power that shapes what is seen.
