Go to Her for Refuge

Devi Mahatmya 13.3

Meaning · English

Go to her for refuge, great king, the Supreme Sovereign. When she is worshipped, she grants people enjoyment in the world, heaven, and final freedom.

Three Sanskrit words carry the line. Sharana means refuge, a place to run to when nothing else holds; it comes from a root for shelter. Parameshvari means the supreme sovereign, the one who rules over all other rulers, and here it names the Goddess. Bhoga means enjoyment, the root sense being something taken in and used, like food or comfort. Apavarga means release, a loosening of what binds. Svarga is heaven. Medhas tells King Suratha to go to her, calling him great king though he has lost his kingdom. He says that when she is worshipped, she gives people all three: ordinary enjoyment, heaven, and release. Medhas says this because Suratha has asked why he still clings to what he lost, though he knows better. Medhas has just said the Goddess as Maya deludes even the wise. The answer he gives is that the same power which binds also frees, so the only sensible move is to go to her. The text offers one door for a worldly wish and a final one alike. It asks the listener to turn toward her as a refuge, not to fight the confusion alone.

A traveller caught in a storm on an open road does not argue with the weather. He walks to the house of the one who owns the land and asks for a roof. The Goddess is that owner: the power that sent the storm is the one who shelters.
