Meaning · English

Hearing the sage's words, King Suratha bowed low before that great and fortunate seer, a man firm in his vows. The king was weary of it all, worn down by his sense of "mine" and by the taking of his kingdom. And the merchant, great sage, was weary in the same way. At once the two went off to practise austerity. The merchant settled on a sandbank by the river, wanting to see the Mother of the world. There he practised austerity, reciting the supreme hymn to the Goddess.

Three words carry this. Mamata is the feeling of "mine", from mama, my. Nirvinna means worn out, fed up, the taste for a thing used up. Tapas, from tap, to heat, is austerity, a discipline that burns off what clouds the mind. The story is plain. Medhas has finished teaching, and Markandeya tells Bhaguri what the two men did next. Suratha bows to the sage. He is tired because his clinging to "mine" has been shown to him, and because his kingdom was seized. The text names both causes: the habit of possessing, and the loss. The merchant is tired in the same way. Neither stays to think it over. They leave at once. The merchant goes to a sandbank by the river, and the text says why: he wants to see Ambika, the Mother. He recites the supreme hymn to the Goddess while he practises austerity. So the departure is a turning toward her, not only a retreat from home. The verse answers a question Medhas left open: what do two people do who have just learned that Maya deludes even the wise? The text's answer is that they go to her for refuge, as Medhas advised, and they go in earnest. Markandeya also shows that weariness with clinging is where the seeking begins. It asks of the listener only to notice that order: first the loosening of "mine", then the walk to the river.

Picture a traveller who has carried a heavy bag all day and finally sets it down by a stream. His hands are empty, and only then does he notice the water. Suratha and the merchant set down "mine", and their empty hands turn toward the Mother.
