On that sandbank the two made an image of the Goddess out of earth. They honored her with flowers, incense, fire and offerings of water. They ate nothing. They held themselves in check, their minds on her alone and gathered in one place. They gave an offering sprinkled with blood from their own bodies. So they worshipped her fully for three years, self-controlled. Then Chandika, who holds up the world, was pleased, and she spoke to them face to face.
Markandeya is telling Bhaguri how the king and the merchant carried out what the sage Medhas had advised. Three words carry it. Arhana is honoring someone as worthy, from arh, to deserve. The two did not bargain with the image. They treated it as a guest of rank. Samahita means gathered, put together: a mind that had been scattered over lost kingdoms and family quarrels, now held in one place. Pratyaksha means before the eyes, from prati, toward, and aksha, the eye. She spoke to them directly, with no go-between. The story runs in order. They shape an image from river earth. They offer flowers, incense, fire and water. They fast and restrain themselves. They give a bali, an offering, and the text says it was sprinkled with blood from their own bodies. The telling is brief and does not dwell on it. It shows how total their giving was. Three years pass. Only then is Chandika pleased, and she appears and speaks. Markandeya tells this because the earlier verses sent the king and merchant to the Mother for refuge. This is what going to her looked like for them: plain materials, steady attention, long time. The text does not say she was won by the blood or by the fasting. It says she was pleased after three years of steady worship. The story asks nothing of the listener except to notice what it shows. Their devotion was slow, ordinary and unbroken, and the meeting came out of that.
Think of someone keeping a lamp alight through a long night, adding a little oil each time the flame dips and never leaving the room. No single act of tending is dramatic. The three years of steady worship by the two exiles are like that: small offerings repeated until the light is there.
