Man and Beast Alike

Devi Mahatmya 1.36

Meaning · English

Humans have knowing, it is true, but not humans alone. All creatures have it: cattle, birds, deer and the rest. The knowing that humans have is the same kind of knowing that deer and birds have, and what the birds and deer have, humans have too. In this they are alike, and in other things as well the two are alike.

Two words carry the teaching. Jnana is knowing, from the root jna, to know. A jnanin is one who has it. Tulya means alike, of equal weight, from the idea of a balance where neither pan sinks. The king had asked why people who know can still be deluded, and he counted himself among them. Medhas answers by shrinking the claim. Yes, humans have knowing. But so do cattle, birds and deer, and the knowing of the two is the same kind. People see what is useful, what is dangerous, what is theirs, as animals do. Medhas also adds that in other ways the two are alike, and the line does not say which. This is the answer to the question behind the question. The king assumed that knowing ought to free a mind from clinging. Medhas says the knowing he means is the ordinary awareness that every living creature has. It does not carry its own cure, so having it is no guarantee against attachment. The puzzle of the king and the merchant loosens a little. They are not unusually foolish. They are creatures, and creatures cling. The verse asks the listener to see this likeness plainly, without flattery and without shame, before the next verses explain what really holds the mind.

A lamp burns in the farmhouse kitchen and another in the cattle shed. The flame is the same and so is the light it throws. Human knowing and animal knowing map to those two lamps: the same kind of light, whichever room it happens to burn in.
