Meaning · English
Then the whole army of the demons, crying out in dismay, was lost. All the hosts of the gods reached the greatest joy. The gods, together with the divine great sages, praised the Goddess. The lords of the gandharvas sang, and the troops of apsaras danced.
Medhas is finishing the story of the buffalo demon for King Suratha, and he ends it with a crowd scene. The demon army has lost its leader. Its soldiers cry out in dismay and are lost. The text gives them one line and moves on. The rest of the passage belongs to those who were freed. Four groups appear. The devatas are the gods, who had been driven out of their own places. Their joy is called the greatest. The maharishis are the great seers, and they join the gods in praising the Goddess. The gandharvas are celestial musicians, and their lords sing. The apsaras are celestial dancers, and they dance. Each group answers with what it knows best: speech, song, movement. The order matters. The thanks goes to the Goddess, not to the gods' own strength. Medhas tells it this way because Suratha has lost a kingdom and the merchant Samadhi has lost his family. They are asking how a person is released from a hold that seems too strong. The Devi Mahatmya answers that the Goddess is the Mother who frees, and that even the gods needed her. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It shows what the right response to rescue looks like: relief, then gratitude, spoken aloud. It also leads into the hymn of the gods that follows.
Picture a village where floodwater has sat in the lanes for days. When it finally drains, nobody rushes to count what is left. People come out onto their doorsteps, and someone starts singing. The gods' praise is that same release after a long fear, and it turns toward the one who ended it.
