Meaning · English

To the Goddess by whom this whole world is pervaded, who takes form as the gathered power of all the hosts of gods, to Ambika, worthy of worship by all the gods and sages, we bow in devotion. May she bring us good fortune.

Three words carry the verse. Shakti is power, the ability to act. Ambika is Mother, a name of tenderness. Bhakti is loving devotion, from bhaj, to share in. The gods tell the Goddess that she pervades this whole world, and that she does so as her own power. Then they name how she appeared: she is the form taken by the combined power of all the gods. This is a plain memory. In chapter 2 each god gave a share of his strength to make her, and now they say what that meant. The strength they had thought was theirs was gathered in her. She is also worshipped by all the gods and by the sages, so those who praise are themselves among her worshippers. The gods bow with devotion, not with fear. They end with a petition: let her bring good fortune to them. The hymn gives the answer to a question Suratha and Samadhi carry, which is where real strength comes from. The Devi Mahatmya's answer, in the gods' mouths, is that it rests in her, and that she is reached as a mother is reached, by bowing and asking. The verse asks nothing more of the listener than to see this and to bow as the gods do.

Think of a river fed by many small streams from different hills. Each stream thinks the water is its own, yet the river carries all of them and waters the whole plain. The gods are the streams, and the Goddess is the river that gathers their strength and spreads through the land.
