Meaning · English
Her matchless greatness, her strength, even the blessed Ananta, Brahma and Shiva cannot tell. May that Chandika turn her mind to guarding the whole world and to destroying the fear of evil.
Three words carry this. Prabhava is greatness, from bhu, to become, with pra, forth: the power that comes out of her. Bala is strength, the force that acts. Mati is mind, here her turned attention, her will. The gods begin with a limit. Ananta, the endless serpent who bears the world, Brahma, the maker, and Hara, a name of Shiva, the dissolver, are all unable to say how great she is. If those three cannot measure her, no one speaking can. Her greatness has no equal, and her strength is beyond telling. Then comes the plea. The gods ask Chandika to set her mind on two things: keeping the whole world safe, and ending what comes of the unholy. The word for that last thing means fear or ruin that follows from evil, not only the evil itself. This is why the hymn pauses here. Having watched her kill Mahishasura, the gods find that praise runs out, so they stop describing and ask. The Devi Mahatmya, as Medhas tells it, shows her power as something that serves the world's keeping. The listener is left holding that picture: a power too large to measure, asked to turn toward protection.
A village stands under a mountain too tall for anyone to see its top from the road. People point at it, give up describing it, and simply ask it to send rain down gently. The mountain is the Goddess, the villagers are the gods, and the asking is what praise becomes when words fall short.
