Meaning · English
You who are fortune in the houses of the virtuous, and misfortune in the homes of the sinful; understanding in the hearts of the wise, faith in the good, modesty in those born to noble families: we bow to you. Protect the world, Devi.
Start with the words. Shri is fortune, the good luck and prosperity that fill a house. Alakshmi is its opposite, the lack of that fortune: ruin, poverty, things going wrong. Buddhi is understanding, the mind's power to see clearly and decide. Shraddha is faith, a settled trust in what is good. The verse also names lajja, modesty, the inner check that makes a person ashamed to do wrong. Now the clauses. The gods tell the Goddess that she is fortune itself in the houses of people of good deeds. In the homes of the wicked she is misfortune. In the hearts of the wise she is understanding. In good people she is faith. In those born to good families she is modesty. Then comes the plea: we bow to you, protect the world. Why is this said here? The gods have just been freed from Mahishasura, and they are thanking her. The Devi Mahatmya's answer to what she is, is that she is present in every condition. Good and bad fortune, mind, trust and conscience are all named as her. The wicked do not live outside her reach, and neither do the virtuous. What it asks of the listener is only what the gods do: to see each of these as hers, and to bow.
A single actor in a village play steps out as a king, then a beggar, then a sage. The costumes and the fates differ, yet it is one person under each. The gods say the Goddess is like that: one presence, appearing as fortune, ruin, mind, faith and conscience.
