How shall we describe your form, which the mind cannot grasp? How shall we describe your vast valor that destroyed the demons, or your wonderful deeds in battle, done among all the gods and demons? You are the cause of all the worlds, and though you carry the three strands, no faults touch you. Even Hari, Hara and the others cannot know you. You are the refuge of all, and this whole world is a small part of you. You are the supreme, original Prakriti, unshaped and undeveloped.
The gods have just watched the Goddess win the war, and now they say they cannot praise her. Their first question is a helpless one: how do we describe a form the mind cannot hold? Three words carry the rest. Acintya means beyond thought: a-, not, and cint, to think. Guna means a strand, one of the three threads, sattva, rajas and tamas, from which the world is woven. Prakriti means the original nature, the stuff the world is made from, from pra, forth, and kri, to make. The gods then say what they can. She is the cause of all the worlds. She carries the three strands, yet no fault clings to her, as the faults of the world cling to those made from them. Even Vishnu and Shiva cannot know her fully. Everything rests on her, and the whole world is only a part of her. She is avyakrita, unshaped: before anything took form, she was there, and she is first of all. Why is this said here? The gods have just praised her battle deeds and found the praise too small. The hymn answers that the Goddess who fought is the ground of the world itself. The war was one act of something far larger. The text asks the listener to hold her greatness with honest wonder, and not pretend to measure it.
A single wave tries to describe the sea it rises from. It can point to its own crest and say, this much I know. But the sea is under it, around it and beyond it. The gods stand as that wave, and the Goddess as the sea: the whole world is only a ripple of her.
