Meaning · English

By her name, spoken in every sacrifice, all the gods are satisfied, O Goddess. You are Svaha, and the cause of the ancestors' satisfaction; so people also call you Svadha. You are the cause of liberation, keeper of vows beyond thought, pursued by those who master their senses and hold to the essence of truth. Seekers of freedom, sages whose faults are cast away, practise you. You are that knowledge, the supreme Bhagavati.

Three words carry this. Svaha is the call that closes an offering made to the gods in the fire. Svadha is the matching call for the ancestors. Vidya is knowledge, from vid, to know; here it means the knowing that sets a person free. The gods begin with what they know best, the sacrifice. They say that when her name is spoken, every god is fed, and the ancestors too. The word itself is her. Then they turn to those who seek freedom. Their vows are called beyond thought, because no one can fully measure the discipline. They hold their senses in check and keep to what is essential. The sages have thrown off their faults. What do they practise? Her, they say, as liberating knowledge. The question underneath is how one Goddess can be so many things: a fire-call, a gift to the dead, a path to freedom. The gods answer that these are not three powers. What nourishes the gods and the ancestors is the same one who frees the sage. Her hymn here moves from the offerings of a householder to the knowing of a renunciant, and she stands at both ends. The text asks the listener to see no gap between ordinary duty and the search for release.

One oil lamp sits in a house. It is lit for the evening prayer, it shows the grandparents' room, and a child reads by it. The lamp is not three lamps. In the same way, the one Goddess feeds the gods, remembers the ancestors, and is the knowing that frees.
