You are the Word itself, the home of the pure Rig and Yajur hymns, and of the Sama chants whose sung verses are so lovely. You are the Goddess, the threefold Veda, the blessed one who brings the world into being. You are its livelihood, and the one who ends the deepest pain of all the worlds.

The gods keep naming her, and this naming has four parts. Shabda means sound, the spoken word. The gods say she is the Word itself, so the sacred sounds are her and not merely hers. Rik, yajus and saman are three of the Vedas. The Rik is verse, the Yajus is the formula for rites, the Saman is sung melody. The gods call her their storehouse, the place where all three are kept. Trayi means threefold. It is a name for the three Vedas gathered together, and the gods use it as her name. Varta is livelihood, the work that feeds a household. The gods say she is that too, so she is the daily bread as well as the hymn. Then the last clause. She is the one who destroys the greatest suffering of every world. The gods have just lived through the buffalo demon's rule, so this clause comes from experience. They also say she is the cause of the world's coming to be. The praise therefore runs from sacred sound, to ordinary food, to the ending of pain. Her presence has no division into holy and plain. The text teaches that the same Mother who made the world sustains it with its words and its work, and answers its grief. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to hear who she is said to be.

Think of a village well at the centre of a square. The temple singers draw water from it, and so do the farmers, the cooks and the children. One source feeds the chanting and the cooking. In the same way, the gods say one Mother is the source of the hymns, the daily living and the relief from suffering.
