Meaning · English
Goddess, you are Medha, knower of the essence of all scripture; Durga, the unattached boat over the hard sea of existence; Shri, sole dweller in the heart of Kaitabha's foe; Gauri, established beside the moon-crowned Lord.
The gods have just been freed from Mahishasura. Now they say who she is, and they do it with four names. Each name is a kind of help. Medha comes from a root meaning to grasp. It is the understanding that takes in and holds, here the grasp of what all the scriptures are finally about. Durga means hard to pass, the same word used for a fortress. The gods call her the boat that carries people over the sea of worldly becoming, a sea hard to cross, and a boat that clings to nothing, so it will not pull you down. Shri means beauty, fortune, grace. They say she lives in the heart of Vishnu, the enemy of the demon Kaitabha, and no one else does. Gauri means the bright or fair one. They say she has her standing beside Shiva, whose crest is the moon. So the gods name her as wisdom, as rescue, as grace and as the bright partner of the great gods. The names answer a question the story raises. A woman born from anger has just ended a war, so who is she? The gods answer that she is what holds the highest knowledge, carries across difficulty, rests in the heart of the preserver and stands beside the destroyer. Medhas, the sage telling this to Suratha and Samadhi, gives the hymn as the gods' own thanks. It asks nothing of the listener except to hear who is being thanked.
One woman is Mother at home, Doctor at the clinic and Teacher at the school gate. Each person who meets her knows her by the part she plays for them. The gods' four names work the same way, four ways one Goddess has met them.
