Meaning · English
Her face was softly smiling and spotless, like the full round moon, with the glow of the finest gold. Yet Mahisha, in his rage, struck at it, and the sight was astonishing. Then the gods marvel further. He saw the Goddess angry, her brow bent in a terrible frown, her face red like the rising moon, and still he did not give up his life at once. That is the greater wonder. Who could go on living after seeing Death himself enraged?
The gods speak to the Goddess in their hymn of thanks, and they are still amazed. Three words carry it. Citra means a wonder, something that stops the mind. Kupita means angered, provoked. Antaka means the ender, a name for Death. The gods first describe her face at rest. It is gently smiling, spotless, like a full moon, glowing like fine gold. Then they describe the same face in anger. The brow is knit, and the colour is that of a moon rising red at the horizon. Mahisha, furious himself, struck at her and looked straight at that face. The gods say the astonishing thing is not that he died. It is that he stayed alive even for a moment after seeing it. Their closing question answers itself: no one lives who looks at Death when Death is angry. The Goddess is not shown as two beings. She is one face, lovely and terrifying, and which one a person meets depends on how they stand before her. This is why the gods put it in a hymn of thanks. They are naming what they saw, and it is why they are grateful to have her on their side. The verse asks nothing of the listener. It asks only that the listener see both faces and keep them together.
A mother sits at the table, calm and smiling, and her face is the safest thing in the room. Then her child runs toward a busy road, and the same face turns stern enough to stop him mid-step. One face holds both. The gods describe the Goddess this way, gentle as the moon and fearsome to what threatens.
