Even so, they are flung into the whirlpool of 'mine', into the pit of delusion, by the power of the Great Illusion, who keeps the world going. So let no one be amazed at this. She is the yoga-sleep of Hari, lord of the world, the Great Illusion. By her the world is bewildered.

Medhas answers a question the king and merchant have been circling: why does the mind cling to people who wronged it? Three words carry the answer. Mamata is 'mine-ness', from mama, 'of me'. It is the feeling that this person, this house, this crown belongs to me. Moha is bewilderment, a mind that has lost its bearings. Mahamaya is the Great Illusion, the power by which the world appears as separate things we hold on to. The clauses go in order. Even creatures who know things, as the earlier verses showed, are dropped into a whirl of 'mine' and into a pit of bewilderment. The cause is Mahamaya's power, and the text says it is the same power that keeps the world running, so clinging is part of how life is held together. Medhas then says there is no cause for wonder. The king and merchant are not unusually weak. She is also named as the yoga-sleep of Vishnu, the sleep in which the lord of the world rests, and by it all beings are bewildered. Medhas teaches this to settle their shame. Their attachment is not a private failing to be hidden. It is how the whole world is moved. The verse asks the listener to see the grip clearly, and to stop being astonished at it. A commentator's reading is not needed for that, since the verse is plain.

A road after rain has a pothole filled with water, and the surface looks as level as the tarmac around it. A careful driver with open eyes still drops a wheel in. Knowing and seeing are not the same as being safe. Attachment is that hidden hole, and the power behind it covers it over for everyone.
