Meaning · English
Even the minds of the wise she seizes by force and, drawing them in, gives over to delusion. She is the Goddess, the blessed one, the great Maya. By her this whole world, moving and unmoving, is sent forth. When she is pleased, she is the giver of boons and becomes the cause of freedom for human beings. She is the supreme knowledge, the source of liberation, ancient and without beginning. And she is also the cause of the bonds of worldly life, she who is the sovereign of all lords.
Medhas has just explained why the king and the merchant still ache for the people who wronged them. Here he names who is behind that pull, and the answer has two faces. Key words. Mahamaya means the great Maya. Maya is the power that makes things appear and bind; maha says it is vast. Vidya is knowledge, from vid, to know. Samsara is worldly life, the going round of birth, attachment and loss; bandha is a bond or tie. The plain sense, clause by clause. Medhas says Mahamaya does not spare the learned. She pulls even a wise person's mind toward delusion, and the word he uses is force. The same Goddess sends forth the whole world, everything that moves and everything that stands still. When she is pleased, she gives boons, and for human beings the great boon is release. She is the highest knowledge, and that knowledge is the cause of liberation. She is also the cause of the tie to worldly life. Medhas ends by calling her the sovereign of all lords: no ruler stands above her. Why it is taught here. The king asked, in effect, why a man who knows better still clings. Medhas answers that knowing is not enough to cut the pull, because the pull is hers. The same power that holds is the one that frees, so the way out is not to fight someone else. It is to turn to her. What it asks of the listener. Nothing is commanded. The verse offers a way to read one's own attachment: not as a private failing, but as part of her working, and her pleasure as the opening.
A river current can drag a strong swimmer off course against his will, and the same river, once he stops fighting it and goes with it, carries him to the far bank. The Goddess is that one river: the pull that binds the mind and the passage that frees it.
