Meaning · English
Rushing down upon them, she struck the great asuras dead. In that host of the gods' enemies she devoured their strength. With one hand she gathered up the elephants, with their drivers, their goad-bearers, their riders and their bells, and threw them into her mouth. In the same way she tossed in a warrior with his horses, and a chariot together with its charioteer. Having put them in her mouth, she chewed them with her teeth, terrible to see.
Medhas is telling the story of Kali's work in the battlefield, and he tells it briefly. Three words carry it. Asura means a foe of the gods, one who opposes the divine order. Bala means strength or army, and the same word is used for both: the text says she devoured the enemy's bala, so the host and its power go together. Bhairava means fearful, from bhaya, fear; the text uses it for the sight of her chewing. The plain sense, clause by clause: Kali falls on the great asuras at speed and kills them. She eats the army that stood against the gods. Her one hand scoops up the elephants with everyone on them, the men who guard the elephant's heels, the men with goads, the fighters, even the bells hung on the animals. All of it goes into her mouth. Horses and their rider go the same way, and a chariot with its charioteer. Then she chews. Why Medhas tells it: the king Suratha has lost his kingdom, and the merchant Samadhi has lost his family. Both want to understand the power of the Goddess. In this account, the force that arose from Ambika's anger is complete: nothing the asuras brought, whether animals, vehicles or men, is left outside her. The telling stays on how total her action is, not on pleasure in it. The listener is asked only to take in how thoroughly the enemy's strength is undone.
Picture a flood coming down a dry riverbed. Fences, carts and cattle are taken in one sweep, with nothing sorted out and nothing left standing in its path. Kali's single hand gathering elephants, riders and chariots is that completeness: the army's whole strength is taken at once, not piece by piece.
