She seized one by the hair, another by the throat. One she trampled underfoot, another she struck down against her chest. The weapons the demons hurled, and their great missiles too, she caught in her mouth in her rage, and ground them to pieces with her teeth. That whole mighty army of the proud, wicked-minded demons she crushed, devoured, and beat down, some of them in turn. Some fell to the sword, some were struck by the skull-topped staff, and some were crushed by the tips of her teeth. So the demons went to their destruction on the battlefield.

Medhas is finishing his account of Kali among the demon host. Three words help. Kali is the dark form that came out of Ambika's frowning brow. Khatvanga is the staff topped with a skull that she carries. Asura is the word for the demons, the rivals of the gods. Here the narration moves quickly. Medhas lists how she took them: some by the hair, some by the throat, some under her foot, some against her chest. Then comes a second list. The arrows and great missiles the demons threw did not harm her. She caught them in her mouth and her teeth ground them up. Next Medhas sums up the whole army. He calls the demons strong but wicked-minded, durātmanām, meaning those whose inner self has gone bad. Their strength is real, and it does them no good. The last lines give three more ends: the sword, the skull-staff, the tips of her teeth. Medhas does not linger on any one death. He lists them briefly and closes with one fact: the army was destroyed. Why tell it this way to a king who lost his throne and a merchant thrown out by his family? Both men are asking why they cannot let go of what hurt them. Medhas answers with the Goddess, whose power can undo a force that looks unbeatable. The teaching asks nothing of the listener here except to see that scale: the whole host, weapons included, ends in her.

A tide comes up a beach and a child's sandcastle line, with its walls, moat and little flags, is gone in a few waves, tools and all. The demon army with its weapons is the sandcastle. Her power is the tide, which takes the whole of it without effort.
