Meaning · English
Seeing the great army of the asuras struck down in a moment, the great asura Chanda covered the terrible-eyed Goddess with showers of dreadful arrows. And Munda covered her with discs, hurled in their thousands. Those many discs, passing into her face, looked like many orbs of the sun going into the belly of a thick cloud.
Three words carry the picture. Sara-varsha is a rain of arrows: varsha is rain, so the arrows come as a downpour, not one by one. Cakra is a disc or wheel, from the sense of turning; these are the flat, spinning blades thrown in thousands. Arka-bimba is the round disc of the sun, and ghana is a dense cloud. The story goes like this. The Goddess has just destroyed the asura army in a moment. The two commanders left, Chanda and Munda, have seen it. Chanda answers with a rain of arrows. Munda answers with thousands of thrown discs. Both aim at the Goddess, whom the text calls terrible-eyed. Then Medhas gives one comparison. The discs go into her face, and they look like many suns sinking into a cloud's belly. A bright thing goes in, and it is gone. The comparison shows the attack lost inside her, not landing on her. Medhas is telling this to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom, and Samadhi, a merchant thrown out by his family. Both are asking what power holds them and how it lets go. The text teaches that the Goddess is the great Maya who binds and the Mother who frees. The scene shows how the asuras fare against her: however much they throw, it ends inside her. The two listeners are shown that the force opposing them is small beside the one Medhas is describing. Medhas draws no instruction here and does not dwell on the fighting.
Someone stands at the edge of a thick fog bank and throws stone after stone into it. Each one goes in and is gone, with no sound and no mark. The thrown stones are the arrows and discs, and the fog is the Goddess, who takes in all that is hurled at her.
