Meaning · English

Then Kali, in great fury, laughed a fearful laugh and roared like Bhairava. Inside her gaping mouth the teeth shone, terrible to look at. The Goddess rose upon the great lion and rushed at Chanda. She seized him by the hair and cut off his head with her sword. When the head was struck off, the lord of the daityas let out a terrible cry. By that great cry the three worlds were struck with fear.

Medhas tells this part as plain story, and the Devi Mahatmya's own words carry the weight. Start with three words. Kali means the dark one, and also time, which ends everything. Bhairava means fearsome, from the root for fear. Karala means gaping, wide and dreadful. Medhas uses all three to show a face that cannot be borne: a laugh, a roar, a mouth with shining teeth. Then the clauses, in order. Kali laughs in fury. The Goddess rises on the great lion and runs at Chanda. She takes him by the hair and beheads him with a sword. The fallen lord of the daityas, as the text calls him, cries out once more, and the three worlds are afraid. Medhas does not dwell on the blow. He moves quickly to the sound it leaves behind. Why is this told here? Medhas is speaking to a king who lost his kingdom and a merchant cast out by his family. Both had trusted things that failed them. In the story, Chanda and his brother Munda commanded a great army, and it did not save him. The text's point is the scale of the Goddess. What looked unstoppable to the world is ended in a moment. Even the dying cry of a mighty asura shakes the three worlds, and the power that silences it is greater still. The verse asks nothing of the listener directly. It shows the Mother's fury as the other face of the Mother who frees.

A huge old tree falls in a forest. For a moment the whole wood goes quiet, then birds burst up from every branch far away. The fallen lord's cry is the crash, the frightened worlds are the birds, and the one who felled him is greater than the crash.
