Meaning · English
When the world had become one single ocean, at the end of the cycle, the lord Vishnu spread out the serpent Shesha as his bed and lay down to the sleep called yoganidra. Then two fearsome asuras, famed as Madhu and Kaitabha, sprang from the wax of Vishnu's ears, and rose up to kill Brahma. Brahma, lord of creatures, was seated on the lotus that grows from Vishnu's navel. He saw the two savage asuras, and he saw Janardana fast asleep.
Medhas begins the story that answers the king's question about how the Goddess comes to be born. He sets the scene first. The world has dissolved at the close of a kalpa, one great cycle of creation, and only water remains. Vishnu rests on Shesha, the serpent whose name means what is left over when everything else is gone. His sleep is called yoganidra. Yoga here is joining, and nidra is sleep: a sleep in which he is not cut off from himself. Medhas will go on to treat this sleep as the Goddess herself. Then the danger arrives. Two asuras, Madhu and Kaitabha, are born from the wax of Vishnu's ears. Medhas calls them fearsome and says they rise to kill Brahma. Brahma sits on the lotus from Vishnu's navel, the seat of creation, with nothing around him but water. He sees the two asuras. He also sees Janardana, a name for Vishnu, fast asleep and not stirring. Why begin here? The king asked how the Goddess is born and what she does. Medhas answers with a moment when even the lord of the world cannot act, because the Goddess's sleep holds him. That is the first lesson of this story: her power can bind the greatest of the gods, and only she can release him. The sentence is left hanging on that sleeping figure, and the next verses carry on from it.
A man lies deeply asleep in a house at night. His child wakes on the porch and hears footsteps in the yard, but cannot rouse him. The child is Brahma, alone and threatened, and the father's sleep is a power stronger than the one who normally guards the house.
