Meaning · English
With a single-pointed heart, Brahma praised Yoganidra, the Goddess who made her home in the eyes of Hari, in order to wake him. He praised her as the sovereign of the universe, the supporter of the world, the one who brings about its keeping and its withdrawal. He, the lord of radiance, praised her as the incomparable Blessed Goddess, the Sleep of Vishnu.
Three Sanskrit words open this. Yoganidra is the Goddess as Vishnu's sleep: nidra is sleep, and yoga here is the joining in which he rests. Ekagra means one-pointed, from eka, one, and agra, tip: the whole heart gathered on a single thing. Bhagavati is the Blessed One, the Goddess with every divine power. Now the clauses. Brahma sits on the lotus, with two demons about to attack and Vishnu asleep. He does not shout or fight. He gathers his mind and praises. His aim is stated: to wake Hari. Yoganidra has her dwelling in Hari's eyes, so the sleep that closed them is hers. The text then names her in four ways: sovereign of the universe, supporter of the world, the one who looks after its keeping and its ending, and Sleep herself. Brahma calls her beyond compare. Brahma, the lord of splendour, is the one who offers this praise. Why teach this here? The story asks who can wake the one who upholds the world. The text answers that only the power that put him to sleep can release him. Brahma goes to her, not around her. The listener is shown a prayer made with a gathered mind, and a help that comes by asking the one who holds the lock.
A man is locked out of his own house at night. Shouting at the door does nothing. He goes to the one who holds the key and asks. Vishnu's sleep is the locked door, Yoganidra holds the key, and Brahma knocks at her hand.
