Meaning · English
You are svaha, you are svadha, you are vashat, whose very self is the sacred call. You are the nectar, the imperishable, the unchanging syllable, present in three measures. You are the half-measure that stays, never spoken aloud in particular. You alone are Sandhya and Savitri. You, Goddess, are the supreme mother.
Brahma, in Medhas's retelling, names the Goddess Yoganidra with the words of the fire offering. Svaha is the call that gives an offering to the gods. Svadha is the call that gives it to the ancestors. Vashat is the call that sends an offering into the fire. Brahma says she is each of these, the very self of the sacred call. Then he turns to the syllable. Akshara means imperishable, and also a syllable, from a, not, and kshar, to decay. He calls her the nectar, the unchanging syllable, held in three measures. A fourth, a half-measure, stays always and cannot be spoken distinctly. The text does not explain it here, so it is left as Brahma names it. Next he calls her Sandhya, the joining of day and night, and Savitri, the sacred verse sung at that hour. Last, he calls her the supreme mother, jananI para. Brahma is praising in order to wake Vishnu, so he begins by saying who she is: the power behind every act of worship, the sound beneath speech, and the mother of all. The praise asks the listener to see worship, sound and motherhood as hers. The commentators read the half-measure as what lies beyond ordinary speech.
A bell struck once keeps ringing after the strike, thinner and thinner, until you cannot say when it stopped. The spoken sound is the three measures. The faint hum that lingers past hearing is the half-measure the verse says she is.
