Meaning · English
By you alone all this is held up. By you this world is made. By you, O Goddess, it is kept safe, and into you it is drawn back at the end, always. In creation you take the form of creating. In protecting you take the form of keeping. And at the close of this world you take the form of dissolving, you who are made of the whole world.
Brahma is praising the sleeping Goddess, and here he names three jobs and gives them all to her. Three words carry it. Srishti is creation, a letting-go or sending-forth. Sthiti is staying, the keeping of a thing in place. Samhriti is gathering back, the drawing in of what was sent out. The verse says she holds everything up, she makes this world, she keeps it, and in the end she takes it back. Then it says it a second time, more exactly. She does not only do the making. In making, she is the form of making. In keeping, she is the form of keeping. In ending, she is the form of ending. So the three are not three workers. They are three faces of one Mother. The last word, jaganmayi, means made of the world, the world's own stuff. Brahma is saying the world is not a thing she stands outside of and handles. She is what it is made of. This answers the fear that drives Brahma's prayer. He is threatened by two demons while Vishnu sleeps, and he needs the one power that sleep, waking and every act of the gods depend on. His reasoning is that if making, keeping and ending all belong to her, then Vishnu's sleep and his waking belong to her too. The text asks the listener to see where the power sits. It sits in her, behind each of the three works.
Think of one river. High in the hills it is a spring, a beginning. Across the plain it is a wide current that carries boats and feeds fields. At the coast it gives itself to the sea. Spring, current and mouth are one water. The three works of the world are likewise one Goddess in three forms.
