Meaning · English
Great knowledge, great illusion, great intelligence, great memory, great bewilderment: you are all of these. You are the great goddess and the great lord. You are the nature of everything, and you bring forth the three strands. You are the night of time, the great night, and the night of delusion, and you are fearsome.
Brahma, in Medhas's retelling, strings together names for the Goddess, and the list holds light and dark side by side. A few words repay a slow look. Vidya is knowledge, from vid, to know. Medha is a mind that grasps and holds. Smriti is memory. Maya is the power by which things appear as they appear, and moha is bewilderment, the fog in which a person clings to what hurts him. Each name carries maha, great. Prakriti is nature, the stuff the world is made from, and guna is a strand, as in a rope. Three strands twisted together make up all that exists. Ratri is night, and kala is time, which is also death. The sense, clause by clause: she is great knowledge and great illusion, great understanding and great memory, and great bewilderment too. She is the great goddess and the great lord. She is the nature of all things and the one who sets the three strands apart. She is the night of time, the great night, and the night when the mind loses its way, and she is dreadful. The naming answers the question the king and the merchant ask: why does the mind cling to those who wronged it? Brahma places knowledge and bewilderment in the same hands. Nothing that clouds the mind stands outside her, and nothing that clears it does either. The text asks the listener to hold both lists as one Mother, not two powers at war.
A rope is twisted from three strands, and no one can point to where one ends. A hand can tie a knot with it or lift a bucket from a well. The Goddess is like that rope: the same stuff binds and draws up, and both belong to her.
