Meaning · English
You are prosperity, you are the sovereign lady, you are modesty. You are understanding, whose mark is awareness. You are shame, nourishment, and likewise contentment. You are peace, and you are patience.
Brahma, in Medhas's retelling, is praising the Goddess, and this verse is a list of names. Each one is a quality a person can have, and Brahma says she is all of them. Three words are worth slowing down for. Sri is prosperity, the grace that makes a house or a life thrive. Buddhi is intellect, the faculty that sorts and decides. Here it is described as bodha-lakshana, meaning its mark is bodha, the plain act of being aware. Kshanti is patience, the power to bear what cannot be changed. Then the clauses in order. She is Sri, prosperity. She is Ishvari, the lady who rules. She is Hri, modesty, the inner sense that holds a person back from what is unworthy. She is understanding. She is lajja, shame, a close cousin of modesty. She is pushti, nourishment, the feeling of being fed and grown. She is tushti, contentment, the feeling of having enough. She is shanti, peace. She is kshanti, patience. Why does Brahma say this now? He is asking her to release Vishnu from sleep, and he must name who she is first. By saying she is every quality that steadies a person, he shows that she is present inside each of them. The qualities are not separate gifts handed out by someone else. The verse asks the listener to see one presence behind many ordinary virtues.
Think of a single lamp in a house at night. The kitchen is bright because of it, and so is the hallway, and so is the page someone reads by it. Each room has its own light, yet it is one flame. Prosperity, modesty, contentment and patience are the rooms. The Goddess is the flame.
