Meaning · English

She carries sword and spear, club and discus, conch, bow and arrows, sling and iron-bound mace, and in that armour she is fearsome. Yet she is gentle, gentler still, gentlest of all that is gentle, and surpassingly beautiful. She is higher than the high and the low, the highest of all. You alone are the supreme sovereign.

Brahma, in Medhas's retelling, praises the Goddess by putting two opposites side by side. First comes the armoury: sword, spear, club, discus, conch, bow, arrows, sling and a heavy iron mace. One word, ghora, covers all of it. It means fearsome, the kind of thing you do not stand in front of. Then comes saumya, gentle, from the same root as soma, the cool, soft light of the moon. Brahma says she is saumya, then more so, then gentler than everything gentle, and utterly beautiful. He does not say she has two faces. He says one Goddess is both, fully. The last lines lift her out of the scale altogether. Para and apara mean the higher and the lower, the subtle and the gross, everything that can be ranked. She is the highest among them, and so she is parameshvari, the supreme sovereign. Brahma ends by saying that she alone is that. Why say this now? Brahma is praising her because the world needs her help, and he wants it clear who is being asked. A power that was only terrible would be feared. A power that was only soft could not protect anyone. The hymn says she is both, and that both are hers. The text teaches this as praise, and it asks nothing of the listener except to hear who she is.

A mother stands at the stove with a sharp knife and a hot pan, and her child rests easily on her hip. The same hands handle the blade and hold the child. The weapons and the softness in the Goddess belong together in the same way, as one person's care.
