Therefore remember me at all times, and fight. With your mind and intellect surrendered to me, you shall surely come to me, without a doubt.
Three words carry the verse. Anusmara is remembering that keeps going: anu means after or along, smara means to recall, so it is a memory that follows behind every act, not a single recollection. Arpita means offered, set down at someone's feet. Buddhi is the intellect, the part that weighs and decides, while the mind is the part that wanders and feels. Krishna asks for both to be handed over, the restless part and the judging part. The plain sense is that remembrance and action are not taken in turns. Arjuna is told to remember at all times and, in the same breath, to fight. The word "therefore" gives the reason. The verses before say that what a person is absorbed in is what he reaches, and that the last thought at the body's end counts. A last thought cannot be produced on demand, so it has to be grown through ordinary hours. Krishna then promises Arjuna that he will reach him, without doubt. Shankara reads the fighting as Arjuna's own duty, done while the mind rests in God. Ramanuja reads the remembrance as loving devotion that makes the duty an offering. Madhva stresses that the remembrance rests on knowing God as supreme over all.
A woman walks a crowded market road with a full water pot on her head. She bargains, laughs, and steps around carts, yet part of her never leaves the pot. The work of the road goes on, and the steady attention underneath it is the remembrance that Krishna asks to run through all of Arjuna's actions.
1. Choose one short name or phrase you already love, a name of God or a single line from a prayer. 2. Say it silently three times at the start of one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, a commute or a phone call. 3. When you notice your mind has drifted mid-task, say it once more and carry on without scolding yourself. 4. In the evening, note in one sentence whether the task felt any different.
A woman is cooking for three hundred guests at a wedding. Her hands are busy, her mind jumps between the salt, the clock and her aunt's remarks. Dread and work are competing for the same attention. Krishna's instruction would change the moment in small steps. She begins each dish by calling to mind the one she trusts. She keeps cooking, so nothing is neglected. Each time worry pulls her away, she returns to that remembrance, as a hand returns to a rail. The teaching names this as offering the mind and intellect, so that the outcome is no longer hers alone to carry. Ordinary experience confirms only the small part of this: a steady, repeated thought calms the breath and leaves attention freer for the task. The rest, that such remembrance leads a person to God, is the Gita's teaching and is given as such. The verse does not promise that the feast will go well, that her tiredness will lift, or that the day will bring no loss. A person who is ill or overwhelmed still needs rest and a doctor's care.
