Meaning · English
One who always remembers the poet, the ancient one, the controller, smaller than the atom, the support of everything, whose form is beyond thought, bright as the sun, and beyond the darkness of ignorance.
Three words carry the verse. Kavi is poet, a seer who sees what others miss; Krishna uses it for the one who knows everything. Anushasitar comes from a root meaning to teach and to rule, so it is the one who governs and instructs. Anusmaret is remembering that keeps following along, again and again, not one recollection. Achintya is a-chintya, not thinkable: this form cannot be fitted into thought. The plain sense: the two verses before ask for steady remembrance, and now Krishna tells Arjuna what is to be remembered. It is the ancient, all-knowing ruler, finer than the smallest particle, yet the support of everything, shining like the sun, beyond the darkness of ignorance. The extremes sit side by side, tiny and all-holding, so no single picture is enough. The reason is plain. Remembering needs something to rest on, and a mind cannot hold a blank. Arjuna is about to fight, and he is given something steadier than the outcome of the battle. The listener is asked to carry this picture continually. Shankara reads the description as the supreme Brahman taken as an object of meditation. Ramanuja reads it as the personal Lord with a real divine form. Madhva reads it as Vishnu, supreme over all souls and matter.
Before dawn, a person stands in a dark street. Nothing can be seen clearly, yet the sky is already paling, and soon every house, tree and face will show by the same light. The sun is not in the street, and it is what makes the street visible. Ignorance is the dark; the one remembered is the light behind it.
1. Tomorrow morning, stand at a window or door for two minutes before looking at your phone. 2. Pick one phrase from the verse, such as 'support of everything' or 'beyond the darkness', and say it slowly, once, in your own words. 3. Notice whether your attention settles or drifts. Do not judge it; just notice. 4. Once more before evening, at a red light or in a queue, bring the same phrase back for the length of one breath.
A woman is awake at four in the morning, feeding a newborn in a dark house. She is too tired for big thoughts, and every worry comes in at that hour. Krishna's description gives her one short picture to return to: something finer than the smallest thing, holding up everything, bright beyond the dark she sits in. She does not have to understand it. She can say one phrase on each feed, and her attention has somewhere to go besides the worry. Ordinary experience confirms that a familiar phrase said slowly steadies the breath and gives a restless mind an edge to rest on. The verse does not promise the baby will sleep, the tiredness will lift, or the fear will go. If low mood or dread lasts for weeks, that is a matter for a doctor, and remembering is no substitute for one. What the verse offers is a place to turn the mind in the dark hours, and the text teaches that turning there, again and again, is the practice itself.
