Meaning · English
Those you favor are honored in the land. Their wealth and their fame are theirs, and their body of right duties does not fail. They alone are blessed: their children, servants and wives are well kept, for you, who give rise and rising, are pleased with them. Each day the person of good deeds gladly does every duty that is right, and through your grace goes on to heaven. Goddess, do you not give the fruit in all three worlds through such a person?
The gods speak to the Goddess after the buffalo demon has fallen. Two words carry the verse. Dharma is right conduct, from dhr, to hold up: what keeps a life and a household standing. Sukriti, the good-doer, is one who does well, from su, good, and kr, to do. Prasanna means pleased, clear, settled, like water that has stopped being stirred. The gods say the people she is pleased with are honored in their country. Their wealth and fame stay with them, and their dharma does not sink. Their households are kept whole: children, servants and wives are cared for. The gods call such people blessed, because her favor is what gives them rising, abhyudaya. Then the gods turn to the doer. Day after day he carries out every right duty with respect, and by her grace he reaches heaven. So she gives fruit in all three worlds. The gods are answering a question left open by the earlier praise of her fury: what does her favor look like when it is not fury? It looks like ordinary lives held steady. The speakers credit grace, not the doer's effort alone, for both the prosperity and the heaven. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to see where the gods place the source of a good life.
A well beside a village keeps every house on the lane supplied, and the families who draw from it plant, cook and raise children without thinking of the well. In the gods' telling, the Goddess's grace is that well, and the steady household life of the righteous is what its water makes possible.
